Like most places in Jilin, Changbaishan suffers a long spell of
winter days and a much shorter summer. Changbaishan is most enchanting in fall,
when a vast exp
anse of tundra can be seen, swept by swirling snow. Thanks to the elevation
on the mountain, there is an above-normal level of ultraviolet radiation on peak and
flowers display colors more brilliant than those on the plain.
Generally speaking, July and August are the peak seasons, with the latter being the golden time for escaping the heat to visit the picturesque Heavenly Lake (Tianchi).
Yet autumn (September and the first half of October) is when you are mostly likely to get
a discount on hotel reservations. If you do decide to visit in autumn, be minded to first
check the weather forecast for Changbaishan a few days before setting out. Many people
leave the scenic area full of regret because they fail to see the Heavenly Lake, which is
often shrouded in heavy mist at this time.
