Yaohua Restaurant opened in 1943 and served western-style food exclusively until 1950 when Sichuan cuisine was added to the menu here. During the Chengdu Conference in March 1958, Chairman Mao visited and, after tasting stir-fried boiled pork slices with hot sauce (huiguo rou) and stir-fried diced chicken with chili sauce and peanuts, he sang high praise. Since then, the restaurant has become increasingly famous in Sichuan.
