Little Putuo Island, like its larger counterpart in Zhejiang province in eastern China, is one of the most important Buddhist islands on Erhai Lake.

Legend has it that the island is the seal to control the lake installed by Guanyin Bodhisattva when Guanyin converted the area to Buddhism. Construction of temples on the island first appeared during the Ming Dynasty and ever since, there have been numerous renovations and expansions.

On the first story of the temple, there is a statue of Guanyin (Avalokitesava).

Standing on Little Putuo, there is an undisturbed view of Cangshan Mountain to the east and the surrounding Erhai Lake.
