In Dunhuang, there are actually two separate establishments named the Dunhuang Hotel in English (but they each have different Chinese names). This hotel, the Dunhuang Hotel (Dunhuang binguan) is a four-star hotel, built to cater to the influx of foreign tourists after 1976. The hotel is located a few blocks east of Dunhuang’s main traffic circle, about 13km from the airport and 25km to the Mogao Grottoes.
Although the Grand Sun Hotel (Taiyang dajiudian) is in a slightly remote part of town, it is a quiet and comfortable place to relax after exploring Dunhuang’s treasures. This twelve story, four star hotel is just a few minutes due north of Dunhuang’s main roundabout. The hotel has various rooms and suites, designed in both Chinese and Japanese styles.
For budget travelers, the Feitian Hotel (Feitian binguan) is quite an ideal place to stay. This two star hotel offers the cheapest beds in town and is conveniently located opposite the long distance bus station.The hotel provides dorm beds (several beds to a room), dorm triples and spacious standard doubles. All the rooms are clean and comfortable as compared to other dingier establishments.

The Silk Road Hotel (Silu binguan) is a new and comfortable hotel which is located in the center of the city. It is a 13km drive from the airport and 25km from the famous and scenic Mogao Grottoes.The hotel is surrounded with green lawns and there is a courtyard with a fountain, and small bridge, providing a tranquil environment. The hotel offers comfortable triple rooms (dorm rooms), standard double and suites at reasonable rates.
The Western Region Hotel (Xiyu binguan) is another popular place for budget travelers. The hotel is conveniently located, just one block south of the long distance bus station.
The hotel offers very cheap dorms and reasonable doubles with bath. Standard doubles are equipped with TV, air conditioning and private bathrooms. If you’re on a tight budget, you can sometimes rent by the bed and pay half of the price.
