The new railway station at Dunhuang, the location of the famous Mogao Grottoes, is set to open and initiate regular passenger train operations on April 15th. It is also prepared for heavy passenger flow during the upcoming Labor Day holiday, the “golden week” of tourism. This train access will make it more convenient for people to visit the Mogao Grottoes, one of the hottest tourist destinations in China.
According to Gao Zhiqiang, director of the Duanhuang railway office, trains from Lanzhou, the provincial capital of Gansu, and from Jiuquan city, will arrive at the station on the 15th, bringing its first influx of passengers. This newly-built railway station has already undergone a successful trial train arrival from Lanzhou in early March.
Currently, construction of an underground entrance and exit tunnel is going on around the clock. By the time of the Labor Day holiday, Dunhuang Railway Station will have only the rails and the passenger tunnel in operation. According to the plan, construction of the main building of the station will be completed by October this year and will be opened for use next June.
The mystery and beauty of ancient Dunhuang, including the carefully preserved Buddhist frescos and statuaries of Mogao, make it one of the premier tourist destinations in China.
