wannian templeWannian Temple (Wannian Si) is close to Baoguo Temple and this is one of the first sights that travelers pass en route up the mountain. Wannian Temple sits at 1020m above sea level and is officially a temple of “Eternity”. When it was built in the fourth century, there were seven halls at the complex. Today, only one remains although the square structure and domed roof are still impressive examples of Ming dynasty architecture. Like many of the temples on the mountain, Wannian contains a shrine to, and statue of, the Bodhissattva Samantabhadra. Accommodation here, while basic, is friendly and the food here is particularly good. The temple is a short walk from Jinshui where many people begin their ascent. From here the Elephant’s bathing pool can be reached in about four hours.
