Shiwan’s Nanfeng Ancient Furnace, founded during Zhengde period of Ming Dynasty(1506-1521), is a surviving furnace over 400 years, which is certainly uncommon in China for its sticking to burning pottery up to now. It’s therefore listed as Guangdong’s key protection unit of historical and cultural relics.
According to the record in the history, Foshan pottery base was shaped in Tang and Song Dynasty and flourished in Ming and Qing Dynasty. Owing to “Shiwan’s pottery are spread all over Guangdong and Guangxi as well as abroad”, it was deeply enjoyed by the people, and therefore is granted the reputation of “Shiwan tile is the best one in the world”. Nanfeng Ancient Furnace’s mouth faces southwards, while banyan trees are clustered at the back of the Furnace, and cold wind will do occur in the summer, therefore, it’s called “Nanfeng Furnace”.
Nanfeng Furnace’s endless fire of 500 years has continued to spark the memory of Shiwan people, and integrated the modern times’ pulse and spirit into the ancient pottery culture.
