After absorbing Fangcun, the new district now occupies an area of 62.4 square kilometers with a permanent population of 705,700.

Liwan District is located in the west of downtown Guangzhou, on the east and north bank of the Pearl River. The complete transportation network including water, land and air routes in the area makes the district a unique attraction for business people.

Traditionally named as Xiguan, the original Liwan features a lot of ancient buildings and the prosperous Shangxiajiu shopping area. The new Liwan is aimed at building a modern trade and cultural tourism area after adding Fangcun, which enjoys a reputation of “the first flower county in Lingnan.”
