Pearls are a good thing to buy while on Hainan, but Sanya is a much better place to find a bargain. Department stores along Haixiu Dong Lu such as Mingzhu Guangchang sell indigenous products such as coconut coffee, coconut powder, coconut wafers, coconut tea, palm sugar and betel-nut; clothing sections also stock Hainan shirts, which differ from their Hawaiian counter- parts in their use of dragons instead of palm trees on bright backgrounds. Whole shark skirls - like sandpaper - dried jellyfish and other maritime curiosities in the shops along Jiefang Lu are also worth a look.
