copper drum mountainLocated in Wenchang City’s Longlou District, with land to the east and the sea to the west, this is the most eastern point in all of Hainan. This mountain is quite spectacular with many unique and bizarre landscapes as well as interesting legends, and has become known locally as the “Best mountain in eastern Hainan”.

Legend has it that during the Eastern Han Dynasty, the famous “Wave-subduing General” established a base here, leaving behind a copper drum that was later discovered by the locals, hence this mountain’s name.

Copper Drum Mountain’s main peak is 338 meters above sea level. On that peak sits “Wind Blown Rock”, a rock that although not connected to the mountain never falls over. This kind of erosion phenomenon is slightly common in Hainan.

Another interesting local geological phenomenon are the boulders and rocks at the foot of the mountains. They number 3,650 exactly. They are said to originally have been lambs at pasture looked over by a beautiful shepardess who watched over the herd from where the Wind Blown Rock now stands. One day the Emperor of Heaven came by, so overcome by the charming scene and ordered the Thunder God to freeze the scene forever in stone. At Copper Drum Mountain’s northern foot is a beautiful gulf entitled “Moon Gulf”.

How to get there: Take a bus from Wenchang Hospital to Longlou (RMB2) and then take a motorcycle or pedicab (RMB10). A taxi to the mountain from Wechang will cost approximately RMB100.
