wuzhi mountainWuzhi Mountain (Wuzhi Shan) is the highest mountain in Hainan, towering 1867m above Tongzha in the center of the island. Various Li myths abound concerning the name for the mountain (Five Finger Mountain) and its formation. One legend has it that the five mountain peaks are the fossilized fingers of a dead Li clan chief. Another tale is that the five peaks are dedicated to the five most powerful Li gods. Numerous historical poems have also been written about the mountain, the most famous of all by the Hainan writer, Qiujun.

Beyond these legends and myths, this was also once a pilgrimage site. Today, few people make the climb for religious reasons but travelers can still make the hardy three hour climb up the mountain for the spectaclular views.

How to get there: Take a bus from Tongzha to Wuzhi Shan township. From here, take a minibus or pedicab to the Wuzhi Shan binguan. The summit of the mountain is a hard three hour climb through some lush vegetation and pine trees.
