Hefei is an ancient city with a history of over 2000 years. Human activities have started even since the New Stone Period. It was the govermentsite of Hefei county in the Qin Dynasty and the capital of Luzhou prefecture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, therefore Hefei is nicknamed as Luzhou. Hefei was a well-known commercial town in the West Han Dynasty and a cereal & oil distribution centre in the North Song Dynasty. It functioned as one of the four major commercial towns in Anhui at the end of the 19th century. Due to its strategic importance, Hefei had been a focus of contention among the local powers during its historical progress. Xiaoyaojin (Leisure Fort) and Jiaonutai (Archer-training Terrace) are among the historical sites of the Three-Kingdom Period. The city was liberated on Jan.21, 1949 and established as the capital city of Anhui province in 1952.
