There are over 20 public buses in town. If you can read & speak Chinese, you may ask for a free, detailed bus map from hotel gift shops and bookstalls in town, otherwise ask route info from staff in the upper end hotels. Average taxi fares for most areas in Hohhot should be about RMB10-20, but most will need to be bargained.
It is also possible to hire bikes out, since Hohhot is extremely flat, from both the Xincheng (Xincheng binguan) and Inner Mongolia (Neimenggu fandian) hotels. Prices should be under RMB20/day, making this possibly the best way to get around the city.
