Hohhot has a sprinkling of accommodation, all fairly good value but not in great locations.

Beiyuan28 Chezhan Xi Lu 0471/6966211. A small, quite salubrious place just opposite the train station and a little to the right, offering a wide range of rooms and prices, including reasonably priced double rooms with bathroom. Dorm beds from RMB25.

HohhotYingbin Bei Lu 0471/6962200. An old- fashioned place with unspectacular rooms, not tar. riley welcoming to foreigners but convenient for the centre. Turn left out of the station, walk a few minutes and take the first turning on the right - it’s about a fifteen-minute walk.

Railway Hote131 Xilinguole Lu 0471/6933377. Standard budget hotel with attentive staff and clean facilities, far enough south of the train station to escape the attention of touts. Breakfast is included in the rate, and they’ll book train tickets.

TongdaChezhan Dong Lu 0471/6968731. Very convenient for the train station - it’s straight across the road, and a little to the left as you come out. All rooms - doubles and three- and four-bedded dorms - are clean with private bath. If you have a student card, you may get a fifty percent discount. The only drawback about this place is the predatory travel agents, most of whom have offices in the hotel. Dorm beds RMB30.

Xincheng 40 Hulun Nan Lu 80471/6292288, 6292334. In the east of the city near the muse- urn, this is by far Hohhot’s plushest establishment, a palatial estate where sheep graze the grounds. There’s no simple bus route here, but it takes only about five minutes to get here by taxi from the train or bus station. The front desk is cheerful, and you may be able to negotiate a discount if you say you’re a student.

ZhaojunCorner of Xilinguole and Xinhua Dajie 0471/6962211, 6968825. In the centre of town, diagonally across from Xinhua Square, worth the price for the location alone - and it’s a well- organized, comfortable place too. The travel service in the lobby has information in English on their grassland and Genghis Khan Mausoleum tours.
