Hong Kong boasts a quite colossal range of hotels and guesthouses, paretic ularly in the Tsim Sha Tsui area of Kowloon, and you will never fail to find room if you are prepared to do some traipsing around.

At the upper end of the market, you’ll find some of the best hotels in the world, such as the legendary) Peninsula, which is a tourist sight in its own right. At the lower end, most of the options are squeezed into one or two giant blocks on Nathan Road, prin cipally the Chunking Mansions and the somewhat more salubrious Mirador Mansions. Many of the guesthouses in these buildings have recently been renovated, and most are perfectly clean inside (with TV and air conditioning), in spite of what you might think from the appallingly dirty stairwells and questionable health and safety conditions in the Chunking Mansions. Always check the room to see its size (many rooms are minuscule), whether the shower is separate, whether it has a window and whether you have to pay extra for the use of air conditioning.
