Accommodation on the island is nearly all of the upmarket variety, with just one
budget option, the delightful Mount Davis Youth Hostel. The Noble Hostelin
Causcway Bay is another relative bargain.

Bishop Lei International House 4 Robinson Rd,

escalator, this is one of the few mid-priced hotels
in the centre; although the rooms are small,
there’s a swimming pool.

Garden View International House 1 Macdonnell

This YWCA-run place is just off Garden Road, north
of the Zoological and Botanical Gardens. Bus #12A
from the Admiralty bus terminal runs past. Very
salubrious, and the cheapest place in this area of

.com/hpnp. This very friendly four-star hotel is
opposite the Quarry Bay MTR station, exit C, some
twenty minutes by MTR from Central. Excellent
value, with kitchenettes in each room, large pool
and gym - and they offer visitors a goldfish in
their rooms, for company.

Harbour View International House 4 Harbour
Rd, Wan Chai 2802 0111,

Wan Chai Ferry Terminal, and next door to the Arts
Centre, this is an excellent place to stay, with
good-value rooms starting at the bottom of this
category.

Mandarin Oriental 5 Connaught Rd, Central

Considered to be one of the best hotels in the
world, the service here is unmatched. The location
is also excellent, and the hotel lobby is a great
place to people-watch - anyone who’s anyone in
Hong Kong eats or drinks at the Mandarin. The
published full room rate is $3200, but seasonal
discounts can cut this by half.

Mount Davis Youth Hostel (rvla Wui Hall) Mt
Davis Path, Mt Davis 2817 5715. if you’re sick
and tired of the hustle of Hong Kong, this is the
perfect escape. Perched on the top of a mountain,
it has superb views over the harbour and the
atmosphere is unbelievably peaceful. The only
catch is that getting here is a major expedition:
take bus #47A from Admiralty, or minibus #54
from the Outlying Islands Ferry Terminal in Central
and get off near the junction of Victoria Road and
Mount Davis Path; walk back lOOm from the bus
stop and you’ll see Mt Davis Path branching off up

Central.

Grand Hyatt 1 Harbour Rd, Wan Chai 2588

Convention and Exhibition Centre complex (along
with the neighbouring, cheaper, Renaissance
Harbour VieW. The sumptuous lobby needsto be
seen to be believed - luxurious rather than taste-
ful. Regarded by people in the know as one OftHe
poshest places in town. Doubles from $2600.

the hill. You can walk up here to the hostel, but it’s
a long hot walk of around 45 minutes. The sensi-
hie alternative if you have luggage is to get off the
bus in Kennedy Town and catch a taxi from there
(around $50 plus $5 per item of luggage). There is
also a hostel shuttle bus ($1O) from the bus termi-
hal next to the ground floor of the Shun Tak Centre
at the Macau Ferry Terminal, near Sheung Wan
MTR station. The shuttle leaves the Shun Tak
Centre at 9.30am, 7pm, 9pm, lO.3Opm; the return
service leaves Ma Wui Hall at 7.30am, 9am,
lO.3Oam, 8.30pm. Conditions in the hostel are
excellent, though all guests are expected to carry
out one small cleaning task daily. IYHA members
pay less. Dorms $95, doubles/family rooms

Noble Hostel Floor 17, Patterson Building, 27
Paterson St, Causeway Bay 2576 6148,
www. noblehostel.com. A great place to stay,
right in the middle of Causeway Bay, one of the
most attractive eating and shopping areas in Hong
Kong. Rooms are air-conditioned, immaculately
clean and good sizes with private bathrooms, and
are available as singles, doubles, triples and
quads.

Park Lane 310 Gloucester Rd, Causeway Bay
02293 8888, www. parklane.com.hk. Located
slap bang on Victoria Park, the plush Park is con-
veniently sited for the shopping and eating delights
of Causeway Bay.

The Wesley 22 Hennessy Rd T2866 6688,
www.grandhotel.com.hk. A quiet and comfort-
able, modern hotel with cheap rates for its Ioca-
tion. The restaurant isn’t great - eat elsewhere.
