Kam Tin, Hongkong

This small town is famous in Hong Kong as tile site ofKat Hing Wai, one of
Hong Kong’s last inhabited walled villages. Dating back to the late seven-
teenth century when a clan named Tang settled here, the village ($1 donation

to enter) still comprises thick six-metre-high walls and guard towers, although most traces of the moat have gone. Inside the walls, there’s a wide lane running down the middle of the village, with tiny alleys leading off it. A few souvenir sellers and old Hakka ladies in traditional hats pester visitors with cameras for more donations, but the atmosphere is as different from Hong Kong as you can possibly imagine. To get here, get off bus #51 in Karo Tin, walk a Few minutes Farther west (the same direction as the bus), and it’s on your left, visible from the main road.
