The New territories and Outlying Ilands

The point oF staying in these outer regions is to escape into rural tranquilhty where the hubbub is less and prices cheaper. Be warned, though, that at week-ends these places are likely to double in price, and may be booked solid anyway. Advance planning is always necessary. However, it’s worth contacting the HKTB for information about reliable holiday flats in tile Outlying Islands.

Six of Hong Kong’s seven official youth hostels are here, two on
Lantau Island, and four in the New Territories. Don’t imagine,
however,that you can use them as a base for exploring the

rest of HongKong - they are far too remote, and you are even advised

to take yom- own food with yon.

Bradbury Lodge Tai Mei Tuk, Tai Po, New
Territories 2662 5123. Of all the hostels this is
about the easiest to get to. Take the KCR train to
Tai Po, then bus #75K to Tai Mei Tuk Terminal.
Walk south a few minutes, with the sea on your
der. Lots of boating, walking and cycling opportu-
nities right by the scenic Plover Cove Reservoir
(see p.745). Dorms $85, rooms

Concerto Inn 28 Hung Shing Ye Beach, Yung Shue
Wan, Lamina island 2982 1668, ~2836 0022,
from Sai Kung (see p.746). Get off at Ko Tong, walk
lOOm farther on and take Hoi Ha Road on the left
- from here it’s a forty-minute walk. Great for
access to Hong Kong’s cleanest, most secluded
beaches. Dorms $90

Regal Airport Hotel 9 Cheong Tat Road, Hong

eleven hundred sound-proofed rooms with a direct
airbridge link to the airport, express check-in,
pools and a health club. Look out for special meal
and accommodation offers; they often throw in

Regal Riverside 34-36 Tai Chung Kiu Rd, Sha Tin

hotel - though there’s not a lot of competition -
rfght in the centre of Sba Tin, where a double witf
cost you $680. This comfortable pJace often
appears in holiday packages; there’s a fine Asian
lunch buffet served here and a free shuttle bus to
Tsim Sha Tsui, too.

S. G, Davis Hostel Ngong Ping, Lantau Island
2985 5610. From Mui Wo (see p.749) take bus
#2 to the Ngong Ping Terminal and follow the

www.concertoinn.com.hk. On a relatively isolat-
ed and quiet beach, with a delightful terraced
restaurant.

Lamina Vacation House 29 Main St, Yung Shue
Wan, Lamma Island 2982 0427. A few minutes’
walk from the ferry pier, with Chungking
Mansions-sized rooms offering a very cheap way
of staying on the island.

Pak Sba o Hostel Pak Sba O, Hoi Ha Rd, Sai
Kung, New Territories 2328 2327. Take bus #94

paved footpath south, away from the Tiao Tan
Buddha and past the public toilets. It’s a ten-
minute walk and well signposted. This is a great
base for hill walking on Lantau, and you can eat at
the nearby Po Lin Monastery. It’s cold on winter
nights, though - bring a sleeping bag. Dorms $85

Silvermine Beach Hotel 648 Silvermine Bay, Mui

ve.html. Superbly located right on the beach froot,
a few minutes’ walk from the Mui We Ferry Pier
The rooms here are comfortable, quiet and good
value - even more so during the week when they
are discounted (without the discount, a double will
cost you $800). The restaurant spilling out onto the
terraces offers popular barbecues and Thai grub.

Warwick East Bay, Cheung Chau 2981 OO81,

Overlooking Tung Wan Beach, this is the most
upmarket - if also most expensive - place to my,
with a swimming pool and modest restaurant
Singles and doubles have balconies, private baths
cable TV. There’s a forty percent discount on rooms
weekdays and during winter.
