Macau Museum of Art

Part of the Macau Cultural Centre complex, Macau’s only art museum spans five floors. Although the museum displays a permanent collection of art pieces, the first and second floors are given over to temporary exhibitions. The permanent collection includes architectural and historical pieces displayed on the third floor, as well as a collection of paintings and ceramic objects on the fourth floor. Permanent or temporary, the displays always highlight the eclectic mix of east meets west that is symbolic of Macau’s history and culture.Admission: Adults MOP5; seniors, children and students MOP3.

Macau MuseumsMaritime Museum

General Information:
This museum, located just opposite the A-Ma Temple, has been extraordinarily well laid out. Even if you are not obsessed with boats and nautical history, it is interesting to see the tropical looking boats which coloured Macau’s past. From flower boats to fishing boats to dragon boats, each vessel tells a story about the enclave’s culture. Outside, for around MOP20, a junk will show you half an hour’s worth of a different Macau from the water.Admission: MOP5.

Museum of Macau

General Information:
This robust museum built on the grounds of the Monte Fort houses a vast collection of historical and social memorabilia detailing Macau’s complex religious and political past. Highlights include archaeological discoveries from Coloane, classic Chinese furniture and architecture, displays explaining ancient customs and rituals, and literature. The layout is user-friendly allowing the visitor time and space to stroll through the fascinating exhibitions.Admission: Adults MOP15; senior citizens, children, students MOP8.

Museum of Sacred Art

General Information:
Built within the Ruinas de Sao Paulo, the museum now houses what was rescued from the fire that destroyed Asia’s most important Christian monument, the former Basilica de Sao Paulo. Displays are filled with items dating from as far back as the 16th century, including a collection of crucifixes and other religious relics. In addition, there are statues and sacred art works, including a painting of the Archangel St Michael. Centre stage is a silver statue carrier, used to exhibit Our Lady of Remedies on processions long ago.Admission: Free.

Sao Domingos Museum
Located in the upper floors of the beautiful Sao Domingos Church, this museum is a time capsule of the Catholic church in Asia. Actually, saying that, the first floor of the museum houses an exhibition detailing the recent renovation of Sao Domingos itself. Elsewhere, the museum is filled with many fine examples of religious paraphernalia, including exquisite silver rosaries, clerical vestments, statues of saints and two large bronze church bells, dating from the early 1800s and cast in Macau. Entrance is via the church or cloister.Admission: Free
