The provinces of Shaanxi and Henan are both remarkable for the depth and
breadth of their history. The region itself is dusty, harsh and unwelcoming, with a dimate of extremes; in winter, strong winds bring yellow dust storms, while summer is hot and officially the rainy season. But, thanks to the Yellow River. |

Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, and perhaps the most cosmopolitan city you will find in China outside the eastern seaboard. At the same time, it retains copious evidence of its former glories, most spectacularly in the tomb guards of Qin Shi Huang, the renowned Terracotta Army, but also lost of temples and museums. The whole area is crowded with buildings which reflect the development 0f Chinese Buddhism from its earliest days; Hua Shan offers a welcome diversion from the monmnentality of the cities. If you’ve had enough of the relics of ancient cultures, get a glimpse of recent history at Yan’an in high northern Shaanxi, the isolated base high in the loess plateau to which the Long March led Mao in 1937, or at the Red Flag Canal a flagship project of Mao’s self-reliant China of 1960s - at Linxian in northern Henan. |

| History of Shaanxi | |
| Shaanxi Province is one of the most important cradles of ancient Chinese civilization. As far back as one million years ago, some of China’s earliest inhabitants lived in this region, and began spreading their culture along the life-sustaining Yellow River. Throughout the province’s long history, there are 13 dynasties who established capitals here, including the Zhou, the Qin, the Han, and the Tang. Because of this rich history, cultural relics and ruins are plentiful, and may be found preserved both above- and underground. So Shaanxi is called the “authentic history museum” in China. | |
