Around 6km east of the city center, East Lake is worth a trip, with its distinctive rock formations. Lanting Pavilion is around 10km southwest of the city, where Wang Xishi, the fourth-century poet and calligrapher, held a party to compose the Orchid Pavilion Anthology. Also of interest are the Shen family Garden, which commemorates a meeting between Song Dynasty lovers, King Yu’s Mausoleum, the old track roads and the Qingteng Shuwu (Green Vine Study).
Other attractions include the home of the early 20th century woman revolutionary Qiu Jin, now a museum. Though Premier Zhou Enlai was born in nearby Jiangsu Province, his ancestral home was here in Shaoxing. Down Luxun Road, there are several sights associated with Lu Xun, the modern novelist.
