Sight Overview

Tourist AttractionsShijiazhuang mostly lives up to its reputation as the political and industrial, as well as the provincial, center of Hebei, with the usual amounts of pollution, heavy industry, annually renewed concrete buildings and red tape. In terms of sights, the city has only a few areas of interest and almost all of these are located out of town.

The city is important to Chinese revolutionary history for various heroes of the revolution who are buried in the Revolutionary Martyr’s Museum. These include two foreigner doctors, Dr. Bethune and Dr.Kotnis, who worked with the Communists in their war against the “cancers” of internal and external oppression, the Nationalist Party (Guomindang) and the Japanese. This is the city’s most interesting area.Tourist Attractions

Out of town are some interesting, although not overly exciting, sights. The best of these is probably the Zhaozhou Bridge, a remarkable piece of ancient architecture, with a history of over 1,400 years, located 45km south of Shijiazhuang. The scenic area of Cangyan Mountain, 70km southwest of Shijiazhuang, is impressive, especially for the monastery erected high on the cliff. The Longxin Monastery, in Zhengding County, is most noted for the 21 meter high bronze statue of 1,000 armed, 1,000 headed Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy, dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD).
