Eating and drinking
The Uigur districts of town- principally around the Erdaoqiao Market, streets north off Renmin Lu, and lanes west of the post office- are good areas to snack on street food, especially kebabs and breads, the latter often baked in converted oil-drum ovens. Cheap and cheerful Chinese restaurants are all over the town: there is a great place a few doors northwest of the Holiday Inn, serving noodles and buns; and a host of restaurants in the same street as the Laiyuan hotel, most of them dealing in hotpots at around RMB48 for a set selec- tion, enough for two. Shuhan Fengwei fiulou, in a rounded building near Hongshan Park on Hongshan Lu, serves more hotpots, along with good regional Chinese fare and Sichuanese-style cold snacks - portions are huge and cost about RMB15 a dish. For
air-conditioned luxury, the Holiday Inn does buffet breakfasts and lunches where you can eat as much as you like for about RMB95; their calk has coffee for RMB28 a cup.
