The hotels here offer great opportunities for enjoying some peace and quiet, particularly after the rush of day-trippers has subsided. Twenty minutes’ walk south of the #2 bus terminus, the Taihu Hotel (0510/5517888; ) stands among the fish ponds just south of Mei Yuan. It’s a great, secluded place to stay, surrounded by flame trees, with bird- song and green fireflies in the gardens. The hotel restaurant serves excellent Lotus Leaf Chicken, a local speciality of chicken braised in soy sauce and steamed in a lotus leaf wrapping. More luxurious and beautifully located is the opulent Lakeview Park Resort (0510/5555888, 5556909 ), just south of the entrance toYnantou Zhu on 8 Qitang Lu, with a player-piano in the very stately lobby and an Internet connection in each room. Directly across fi’om the Lakeview, the Yuquan Hill View Hotel (0510/5559999, 5551599 ), is good value for money, with airy, comfortable rooms and a curious emphasis on table tennis - five tables fill the lobby and bronze statues of Jiangsu Province table-tennis champions decorate the front lawn.
