The Daci’en Si (Temple of Grace; daily jam-up; RIB), in the far south of town, Kim from the city wall on the route of buses #5 or #41 from the station, is the largest temple in LAN, though when it was established in 647 it was much larger, with nearly two thousand rooms, and a resident population 0f more than three hundred monks. The original was destroyed in 907, and the present buildings are Qing, as are the garishly repainted figures of Iohans in tire main hall. Other rooms hold shops and exhibitions of paintings. All around the temple you’ll see rubbings from a Qing stele in the Xingjiao Si of images of the Tang-dynasty monk Xuan Zang, the temple’s most famous resident, who spent fifteen years collecting Sanskrit sutras in India before translating them here into 1335 volumes. He is shown with the largest bamboo-frame backpack you’re likely to see on your travels.
