Direct trains run to and from most major cities in eastern China, including comfortable, fast double-deckers to Lanzhou in Gansu Province (3hr). There are also three services west to Golmud, for those gravitating towards Tibet; two of these are as fast as the bus (16hr), but watch out for the slow train (22hr). Buying tickets at the station is straightforward - Chinese timetables are on display and seats to Lanzhou are generally available on the morning of departure.
