Yangshuo CarhireAround Yangshuo

Getting to see the countryside around Yangshuo is no problem, as the land between the hills is fiat and perfect for bicycles - Xian Qian Jie is thick with rental shops ifyour accommodation can’t help (RMN10 a day, plus RMB100 deposit). Various people offer excellent and inexpensive guided bike tours, too, allowing close contact with villages and locals through all interpreter; costs are subject to negotiation but RMB15 an hour seems about right. Motor rickshaws also cruise around, destinations listed on their windshields in Chinese, but arc relatively expensive and the drivers don’t speak English.
In Summer, a popular way to see the river is by renting an inner tube from one of the cafes and simply drifting around. Except in very dry winters, boats leave all year round from the dock at the end of XiJie; the ticket office here advertises morning departures upstream, and you’ll also be mobbed by touts. While it’s not such a good idea to travel the whole way to Guilin from Yangshuo - an ultimately tedious twelve-hour journey upstream (wrap warmly in winter) - there are plenty of shorter trips to make, though as Gulin operators have a monopoly on vessels, prices are still relatively high. One way around this is to catch an early morning minibus from Yangshuo north to Xingping (about RMB5), and then a boat fi’om there upstream to Yangdi, past the thickest, most contorted collection of peaks (RMB40; 2hr). FromYangdi, you should be able to catch transport to either Guilin orYangshuo along the highway. Some agents inYangshuo can arrange this for you.
In the opposite direction, Fuli RMB40 by boat) is a pretty village an hour’s ride downstream from Yangshuo on the east bank you could easily cycle here whose produce market (every fifth day) is the best and busiest in the area. If you just want to swim, take the road southeast of town to Camel Hill, turn right down a lane and follow the track to the river - about an hour’s cycling time. Villagers turn up to wash at about 6.30pm, and there are good views of
Moon Hill from here (see below).
