As the eastern mouth of the Three Gorges, Yichang is the gateway to the upper Yangtze River. The nearby Gezhou Dam is magnificent and well worth a visit. Now, the city is well known home and abroad for the controversial Sanxia (Three Gorges) Dam, a massive hydroelectric project being built at Sandouping. The Xiling Gorge is probably the most dangerous stretch of water along the Three Gorges journey, with its turbulent whirlpools. Sanyou Cave, also by the river, offers great cave scenery as well as a good collection of calligraphy.
